Diecast Model Collecting - never too young, never too old to start

I suppose that most of us who got into the world of collecting diecast models started with a collection from our own childhood. It could be a very small collection of what remains of our play-worn models, but the memories they return to us sparks a renewed interest.
Born in 1956 just days before Corgi launched their range, I have my own cherished collection of vehicles, which you'll find illustrated elsewhere on this site. Collecting diecast models - not only of cars but of planes, boats, trucks, farm vehicles, sci-fi and tv/film collectibles, and military equipment, in several different scales, is very much an established hobby and, to some, a business.
The best known diecast model brands include: Tootsie Toys (USA, amongst the very first), Dinky Toys (under Meccano, also one of the very first, launching in Liverpool, UK, in 1934), Corgi (from 1956, under Mettoy Playcraft Ltd in the UK, at factories in Northampton and then Swansea), Matchbox, Politoys (Italy), Burago (Italy), Brumm (Italy), Minichamps, Solido (France), Lledo, and the more recent Hot Wheels (by Mattel), plus many others. Corgi show pre-production models from their 2011 catalogue at UK Modelzone stores
At the beginning of the year, Corgi launched their 2011 Catalogue with some interesting additions. As part of the launch, the pre-production models travelled around the UK to various Modelzone Stores.

Highlights from the new range that were on display during the tour included 'Rail Legends' - a brand new category of superbly detailed locomotives at 1:120 scale - and a new collection of aircraft, including the 'inter war period' Hawker Hart, and the WWII Heavy Bomber, Shorts Stirling, and many more.

For those of you who collect and admire the road vehicle diecasts for which Corgi is most famed, Corgi's latest Road Transport range features some of the finest trucks - including the Eddie Stobart liveried MAN Tanker as featured in the TV series 'Eddie Stobart Trucks and Trailers' - plus the addition of the iconic Ford Granada MkII, Fiesta MkI and Fiesta XR2i in the Vanguards range, along with others. There is also an addition to the Colin McRae collection.

The latest Corgi models were extensively previewed at Modelzone stores in Birmingham, Cardiff, Cambridge, Croydon, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle during the Spring, and Modelzone supported the launch with a competition to win a highly limited edition Jaguar XJ12 preview model.
