Born in 1956 just days before Corgi launched their range, I have my own cherished collection of vehicles, which you'll find illustrated elsewhere on this site. Collecting diecast models - not only of cars but of planes, boats, trucks, farm vehicles, sci-fi and tv/film collectibles, and military equipment, in several different scales, is very much an established hobby and, to some, a business. The best known diecast model brands include: Tootsie Toys (USA, amongst the very first), Dinky Toys (under Meccano, also one of the very first, launching in Liverpool, UK, in 1934), Corgi (from 1956, under Mettoy Playcraft Ltd in the UK, at factories in Northampton and then Swansea), Matchbox, Politoys (Italy), Burago (Italy), Brumm (Italy), Minichamps, Solido (France), Lledo, and the more recent Hot Wheels (by Mattel), plus many others.
